Model Years

Data study

The problem owners report most for every model year, 2010 to 2026

We matched the text of every NHTSA owner complaint about 94 popular models, model years 2010 to 2026, against 59 common problems, and named the one owners describe most in each model year.

This edition covers the 407,500 owner complaints in NHTSA's file dated Sep 29, 2026 (filed through Sep 27, 2026) about 1,278 model years of the 94 models on this site. The table below names the most described problem for all 1,223 model years with at least 10 complaints, with the number of complaints that describe it and their share of that year's complaints. Download the full table (CSV).

Key findings

  1. Stalling is the problem owners describe most. 33,715 of the 407,500 complaints describe the engine stalling or shutting off. It is the most described problem in 167 of the 1,223 model years in the table, more than any other. Loss of power or limp mode is next: 26,465 complaints, and the most described problem in 110 model years.
  2. The 2017 Ford Escape has the most complaints about a single problem. 1,275 of its 2,688 complaints (47%) describe overheating or coolant loss. The five model years with the most overheating complaints are all Fords: the 2017, 2018, 2013, and 2014 Escape and the 2017 Edge. The 2018 Escape is second, with 990 of 1,798 complaints (55%).
  3. The 2018 GMC Acadia has the highest share for one problem among model years with at least 100 complaints. 241 of its 395 complaints (61%) describe shifter errors, and 220 of those mention the "Shift to Park" message. Shifter errors are the most described problem in 18 model years, 15 of them GM models from 2017 to 2022: the Buick Encore GX, Chevrolet Blazer, Chevrolet Malibu, Chevrolet Traverse, and GMC Acadia.
  4. Cracked windshields are mostly a Subaru complaint. The four Subaru models in the study account for 3.7% of all complaints but 59% of those describing a cracked or shattered windshield (3,564 of 6,066). A cracked windshield is the most described problem in 26 Subaru model years from 2015 to 2024. The 2019 Forester has the most (402 of 833, 48%) and the 2022 Outback the highest share (277 of 463, 60%).
  5. Auto start-stop complaints come disproportionately from Hondas. Hondas draw 39% of the complaints that describe start-stop problems (1,408 of 3,624), against 11% of all complaints. Start-stop problems are the most described problem in 16 model years, 13 of them Honda Odyssey, Passport, Pilot, and Ridgeline years. The 2016 and 2017 Pilot have the most start-stop complaints (257 and 202; stalling comes first on both), and the 2024 and 2025 Odyssey the highest shares of any model year with at least 100 complaints: 57 of 107 (53%) and 196 of 382 (51%). NHTSA's engineering analysis EA25004, "No Restart After Auto Start/Stop Engages", opened on Mar 26, 2025, names 2016 to 2025 Pilots, 2018 to 2025 Odysseys, 2019 to 2025 Passports, and 2020 to 2025 Ridgelines among the models in this study, and is still open. NHTSA's recall file has no recall for it.
  6. Engine failure is the most described problem on every 2025 GM full-size pickup and SUV in the study, and on each 2026 one with enough complaints to name a problem (the 2026 Suburban, with 15 complaints, has too few). 236 of the 715 complaints about the 2025 and 2026 Silverado 1500, Sierra 1500, Tahoe, Suburban and Yukon describe it, and 76 of those name the 6.2-liter V8. GM's recall 25V-274 for that engine covers 2021 to 2024 models. On Aug 20, 2026, NHTSA opened engineering analysis EA26005 ("Loss of motive power due to engine failure post recall remedy"), which names 2021 to 2026 models.
  7. Phantom braking leads every Tesla Model 3 year from 2019 to 2023 and every Model Y year from 2020 to 2023. The 2022 Model 3 has the highest share: 269 of its 765 complaints (35%) describe phantom braking or false collision alerts.

How we counted

  • Source. NHTSA's owner complaint file, dated Sep 29, 2026: 407,500 complaints about 1,278 model years of the 94 models on this site, 2010 to 2026. Each model's page says what it includes (for example, the F-150 figures leave out the electric F-150 Lightning).
  • What a described problem is. We search each complaint's text for descriptions of 59 problems, such as stalling, a cracked windshield or phantom braking. Most patterns look for the problem described, such as "the brake pedal went to the floor"; a few, such as backup camera, wiring, suspension or steering rack problems, count complaints that name the part, since owners seldom name those parts unless something went wrong. A match does not count when the owner says the problem did not happen ("no oil leaks"), describes a risk ("could cause a stall") or quotes a recall notice. More on the method.
  • One complaint can describe several problems. 76,605 complaints describe two or more, not counting warning lights. 243,580 of the 407,500 complaints (60%) describe at least one of the 59 problems and the rest describe none, so a year's shares do not add up to 100%.
  • Which problem the table names. The one each year's recalls page names as most described: described in at least 5 complaints and at least 5% of that year's complaints. Problems tied for the top are named together (45 model years). When the check engine light or several warning lights at once come first or tie, the table names the problem and notes the warning light (75 model years). In 6 model years only a warning light is described often enough, and in 183 no single problem is, sometimes because most complaints are about a recall rather than a failure; the table then names the area NHTSA files the most complaints under, when at least 5 complaints name one. Model years with fewer than 10 complaints are left out (55 of 1,278).
  • Two warning-light items are set aside. The check engine light is mentioned in 27,559 complaints, which would make it the second most described item, and several warning lights at once in 5,598. Neither says what failed, so the table names the problem apart from them. A light tied to one system, such as the airbag warning light, counts as a problem.
  • Counts, not rates. We have no sales figures, so a model that sells more will draw more complaints. The share of a year's complaints is the better figure for comparing years.
  • NHTSA does not verify complaints. They are owners' own reports, published as filed with personal details removed. Some owners file more than once. We count complaints as NHTSA lists them.

Caveats

  • The patterns that find each problem miss some descriptions and catch a few they should not. We read random samples of each problem's matches before changing a pattern.
  • Newer model years have had less time on the road. The 2025 and 2026 counts will grow, and a problem that shows up with age, such as rust or oil consumption, will not lead a new model year yet.
  • A recall, an NHTSA investigation or news coverage can prompt more owners to file. A jump in complaints can reflect attention as well as failures, and the data cannot separate the two.
  • Brand comparisons cover only the models in the study: four Subarus, two Teslas, and so on. They are not brand-wide figures.
  • This is a dated edition. NHTSA adds complaints every week, including some filed earlier, so each model year's own page, linked from the table, has the latest counts.

Sources and method

  • NHTSA owner complaint file (FLAT_CMPL), recall file and investigations file, each dated Sep 29, 2026; complaints filed through Sep 27, 2026.
  • This is a dated edition: its figures stay as they were on that file. Each model year's own page has the latest counts.
  • Correction, Oct 2026: this edition said "stalling or shutting off while driving". The count includes stalling or shutting off at any time, including at a stop. The figures are unchanged.
